On two wheels

Cycling through the Beemster

The Beemster is one of the best places to cycle in the Netherlands. Flat ground, quiet roads and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of straight lines, wide horizons and old windmills. Take one of our electric bikes and ride out straight from the bubble tent.

Routes

Three routes, three kinds of day

From an easy loop to a full day of exploring. Pick the one that suits you.

  1. Short route

    UNESCO Beemster loop

    23 kmAbout 1.5 hours

The route for an unhurried afternoon. You ride through the heart of the Beemster polder, past the geometric pattern of fields laid out in the 17th century. Along the way are historic farmhouses, cheese makers and Fort bij de Middenweg. Flat, quiet and beautiful.

  2. Medium route

    Local produce route

    35 kmAbout 2 hours

See the Beemster through the people who make its food. The route takes you past cheese farms, a dairy keeping Jersey cows and the Beemster Erfgoedcentrum heritage centre. Stop for a tasting or a fresh lunch at one of the farm shops. Most of it runs over quiet polder roads.

  3. Long route

    Beemster forts route

    52 kmAbout 3.5 hours

A full day out through the Beemster polder. You follow the historic forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a second UNESCO World Heritage site. Along the way you pass Fort Spijkerboor, Fort bij de Middenweg and several other defence works. It combines well with stops for lunch and coffee.

Bike hire

Electric bikes are available

No bike with you? You can hire electric bikes through us. That makes the longer routes easy going too. You arrange them on the spot and we talk you through everything before you set off.

Good to know

The Beemster is completely flat, which puts cycling here within reach of everyone. The polder roads are quiet and well kept. Along the way you can use the Dutch numbered junction network, so you always find your way. We also offer free cycling routes to choose from, so you always ride one that suits you.
